my pregnancy with ember: the best christmas EVER.

The one where we made everyone cry.
Well, I think a couple men shuffled uncomfortably, BUT I pretty much call that the equivielant of tearing up for them.

Neil was laid off on the 21st of December. We returned any Christmas gifts we'd already bought just to make up the funds and decided to go in a different direction.

I took the sonogram dvd that we received from Ember's gender ultrasound. It took a bit of finagling, ok, actually a lot of finagling, but I was able to get the actual movie file off the dvd. I took the file and did some editing, adding music, and text, to create a more personal video.

Then on Christmas day, the plan was to share this video with each of our families, and reveal to everyone "who" Ember was. Nobody even knew that Neil and I had already found out that she was a girl the week before

It took more work than I realized that it would actually. I had to download quite a few... errmmm... different programs before I found one that actually worked and converted what I had pulled off the dvd into something I could then work with and edit. It's been a year and a half now of course, and I wasn't writing anything down when I did it. Mostly because I only had a few days to do it and it was starting to feel a bit frantic towards the end! I wish now that I had because it would just be lovely to know. I did a lot of googling and a lot of questionable downloading and a lot of just hoping something would work out.

I think I actually pulled it all together on Christmas Eve, in the morning.
I won't share the video here. It's about 6 or 7 minutes long, and you know it's not really something you would want to watch unless you're wanting to find out if our baby was a boy or a girl. And well, you already know that.

I will however, share with you the song I placed in the very beginning of the video, so enjoy that if you wish.

Neil and I felt it was quite appropriate.

We played the video a few times that day, and received quite a reaction every time. And I'm not really sure if it wasn't just because after everything that had happened, I wasn't the only one holding my breath. And there she was, our baby girl. I love doing personal gifts, and this was probably the best idea I've ever come up with.

It felt really good to have had about a whole week after the ultrasound to enjoy knowing we were having a girl before anyone else. And it was equally as fun to share it with everyone when we did, and the way we did.

What started as a last minute idea to not only share our news but also create a special Christmas gift on a budget, actually ended up making the day one of the best ever. In fact, it's one of the first Christmas's in a few years that I literally just enjoyed and loved the entire day.

  1. That's awesome! I wanted to pull the file off my dvd but I haven't figured out how yet. Hmmm I guess I need to figure out what I did with it and try again.

  2. Dani, this idea is so special!! What an amazing way to share with your family. Great song choice. :)
